Program for the energy and environmental renovation of the “A. Gemelli” University hospital in Rome, for the creation of a “Green Hospital” and the reduction of the carbon footprint of the structure

In view of a strategy of renewal and innovation, the Gemelli Hospital has defined an operative program of activities, which have already been ongoing for several years, aimed at sustainability, efficiency and energy saving, with great care for the environmental, social and economic aspects. For this purpose a development plan has been set up for the existing structures bringing together innovation, research and energy saving thanks to maintenance and energy management work with the application of new technologies and solutions. The first level of requalification of the existing systems must include a careful analysis of the existing situation, of the efficiency level of the systems and the single components, of the respect of the existing laws and norms and the availability of heating fluids with heated production installations and energy sources. These analyses, which were performed along with the evaluation of economic models and cost/benefit analyses, were used to define the work necessary and the guidelines to obtain greater energy efficiency of the structure. The possibility for an economic return on the investments was evaluated as well as improvement of environmental impact, keeping in mind the main sources of energy consumption such as the heating liquid installations and the air conditioning systems.

Consequently, the first external and system energy retrofit work was set up. This included maintenance work on building structures and systems, updating the technological installations and setting up optimisation system for the exiting installations.
Based on the activities perfumed, the positive actions described above and the declared planned approach for he future, a Protocol was signed with the Ministry of the Environment, signed by the Minister at the time, Clini, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – Faculty of Medicine and Surgery to start-up a collaboration according to law number244 of 24th December 2007, to create a program for the environmental and energy requalification of the “A. Gemelli” University Hospital in Rome.
