Hospital and University: a Contemporary Infrastructure
The project proposes an integrated campus capable of uniting the hospital, university, and city in a single, coherent, efficient, and community-friendly architectural system. The Santa Caterina Hospital in Girona (Spain) is connected to the new buildings through spatial continuity ensured by a large north-south infrastructure: a “central spine” that organizes flows, accommodates shared services, and becomes a recognizable urban feature.
The compact, vertical layout reduces distances, simplifies travel, and improves operational efficiency, fostering collaboration between hospital and university functions. The choice of rigorous structural modularity—based on a repeatable and standardized system—allows for maximum design flexibility and the true transformability of the spaces over time.
The campus is designed to grow in phases, with a progressive expansion model that does not interrupt activities and allows investments to be adapted to available resources. At the center, a large urban park becomes the green heart of the project: a public space, a meeting place, and an environmental device capable of improving the microclimate and reducing the urban heat island effect.
Technological facades and integrated solar shading systems ensure comfort, climate control, and a unified architectural identity. The park’s photovoltaic roofs and pergolas contribute to renewable energy production, covering up to 30% of total demand. A contemporary, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure, designed to evolve alongside the city and its people.
