Consolidation of the castle hamlet of Rossena
Consolidation and furnishing following the Rossena landslide
Landslide safety, terrain defence works, hamlet renovation and urban furnishing, Matilda of Tuscany castles
In 2005 there was a significant landslide that affected the slope to the east of the cliff of Rossena, from the provincial road along the summit that leads to the castle of Canossa up to the course of the Vico River. The landslide is 2 km long along the slide line and 800 m wide.
While the castle of Rossena is placed on a volcanic block of ophiolite rock, the attached medieval hamlet, which is located along the slopes, risked being dragged down by the landslide that damaged the road and the houses below the hamlet. With the collaboration of the “Servizio Tecnico di Bascino” organisation, three barriers were placed, made of columns of large diameter and ties to make the residential area and the connecting road safe. Afterwards the services and furnishings were built to recuperate the hamlet from a functional and architectural point of view in a context of enormous historical and landscape value.
