Restoration of the “Maddalena 2” navigation basin of the Canale Industriale at Panperduto
Restoration of the “Maddalena 2” navigation basin of the Canale Industriale at Panperduto
Design and work supervision for the restoration and reactivation of the “Maddalena 2”navigation basin of the Canale Industriale at Panperduto, to allow tourist navigation on the international Locarno – Venice waterway and for the “Anello Verde-Azzurro” (Green-Blue ring) of Expo 2015. The basin involved in the project is part of the historical waterway section of Panperduto where the waters of the Ticino are crossed by a barrier and sent to a basin from where they flow to the “Villoresi” canal used for irrigation for all the lands north of Milan as well as to the “Industriale” canal that supplies a number of hydroelectric plants and then flows into the “Naviglio Grande” canal that goes all the way to the dock in Milan.
The restored navigation basin allows vessels to enter the Panperduto basin and go directly to the Industriale Canal.
In this way the old navigable route that connects Lake Maggiore to the dock of Milan is reactivated through the Ticino River and the Naviglio Grande Canal. It was the waterway used in the past for the transport of materials and stone blocks for the construction of the Cathedral of Milan. These goods would travel with the A.U.F. brand, meaning “Ad Usum Fabricae” (for constriction use) and gave rise to the expression: “travelling by uf”.
The project was focused on the technical and functional restoration of the navigation basin with respect to the architectural and environmental value of the site at the same time guaranteeing the introduction of the equipment and the modern electromechanical installations that can help in the use of the navigation basin during the crossing process.
The basin has a length of around 50 meters (with 26.8 navigable), a cross width of 6.5 navigable with an internal height of 3.9 and a maximum height of 2 meters and maximum basinful of 2 meters and a minimum draught of 1.65 meters.
