Study on tourist navigation in the Lombardy region
Restoration of canals from Milan to Locarno and from Garda to Mantua
Historical canals, navigation from the Mincio and the lakes of Mantua, landscape and tourism, economy, art and history
The study focused on the lesser tourist waterways and in particular on the historical Lombardy canals, from Milan to Lake Maggiore and the Po, along the Locarno – Venice route, and from Garda Lake to the lakes of Mantua along the Mincio River. For each functional section, a possible navigation rectangle was identified as well as the hydraulic and terrain characteristics of the network, the bottlenecks, the obstacles to be removed and the kind of vessels that were suited for navigation. The whole study was overlaid by a cost-benefit analysis for infrastructure investment and the impact on the environment.
The task was assigned to RTI of which Binini Partners is group leader and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and ing. Francesco Prinzivalli are members. It included various focus groups in the area to involve local organisations and businesses.
The result was a historical, landscape and infrastructural heritage of international importance.
