Restoration of the “Maddalena 1” navigation basin at the Villoresi Canal at Panperduto

Restoration and reactivation work supervision for the “Maddalena 1” navigation basin on the Villoresi Canal at Panperduto for the reactivation of tourist navigation on the international Locarno – Venice waterway and for the “Anello Verde-Azzurro” (Green-Blue Ring) of Expo 2015.
The basin in question is a historical waterway hub at Panperduto, where the waters of the Ticino are intercepted by a river barrier and flow into a still basin from which the Villoresi canal originates, supplying irrigation water for all of the area north of Milan, as well as the Industriale Canal, which supplies power to a series of hydroelectric plants and then becomes the Naviglio Grande Canal which arrives all the way to the Darsena (the port) in Milan.

Th restored navigation basin allows entry to vessels from the Panperduto basin directly onto the Villoresi Canal, reactivating navigation along it.

The project focused on the technical and functional restoration of the navigation basin with respect for the architectural and environmental value of the area, at the same time guaranteeing the introduction of modern electromechanical equipment and apparatus that can make the use of the navigation basin more effective during the crossing procedures.

The basin is around 41 meters long (with a navigable length of 23.30 meters), a navigable width of 5.5 meters and an internal height of 2.70 meters, with a maximum basinful height of 1 m and minimum draught of 1.5 meters.
