DEAS in Careggi

Work supervision for the creation and completion of the DEAS, Dipartimento Emergenze e Alta Specialità (Emergency and high speciality department) of theAzienda Ospedaliero Universitaria (University Hospital) of Careggi, in Florence

The Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Careggi (university hospital) is the largest hospital in Florence and in Tuscany and one of the main ones in Italy. Here the DEAS is the beating heart of the emergency department with its highly specialised diagnostics and intervention services. The surgery area is made up of various blocks which today host ordinary patient rooms, sub-intensive ones, intensive for traumas and extra-corporeal support, internal medicine, cardiology and invasive cardiology, heart surgery and heart-surgery intensive care, vascular surgery, thoracic and pulmonary surgery, general emergency surgery, nephrology, image, invasive and instrumental diagnostic services as well as general pavilion services, offices and directional areas. All of this came after an articulated program of demolitions and reconstructions performed in previous years. Today the pavilion has 374 beds, including 234 for ordinary stay, 60 sub-intensive, 42 intensive and 28 technical for observation.

In the surgery area, the DEAS is one of the most important public investments in Italy for the advancement of healthcare and the application of new diagnostic and intervention technologies from hybrid theatre surgery to the mini-invasive techniques on the blood vessels, the heart and brain, for health and the quality of life.

The buildings already completed and functioning include: the trauma centre which combines the centralised emergency room of all the Careggi area, including CTO, with the diagnostic block on level -1 and the 15 operating theatres on level +1; the new dialysis and nephrology department, with 32 artificial kidney positions; the new hemodynamics and electrophysiology department, with 7 diagnostic and intervention rooms plus the new chapel designed by Binini Partners.
This is the integrated tender to complete the new general surgery block already built to be completed on an original design by Prof. Arch Paolo Felli of the CSPE in Florence. The work, including the definitive and executive designs, was assigned to RTI made up of NBI of the Grupo Astaldi with Arco Lavori, Philips and Sidem. They will complete the work in progress for the demolition and reconstruction of block F, under the preliminary and definitive design as well as work supervision of Binini Partners. This is the last block of the old x-shaped pavilion built at the start of the 20th century, which will house the transplant centre with surgical patient rooms, the OMT for marrow transplants and haematology which should be functioning within a few years.

Binini Partners, group leader of ATI formed along with Consilium, following the assignment of the tender for work supervision and safety coordination in the execution phase, directed and followed all work, including the supply, installation and set up of all the technological equipment of the operating theatres and the diagnostic and intervention area. Consilium followed the electric and mechanical systems sector.
