Restructuring and extensions of the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato (Province of Milan)
2nd Implementation path – new university location and biomolecular research labs

The IRCCS Policlinico San Donato hospital is the first structure of the San Donato group, University and Research hospitals and among the most important private hospital operators in Italy. With regard to size, type of services offered and number of patients, the scientific healthcare and research institute is a highly specialised hospital with its courses in medicine and surgery and nursing science. It is the first on a regional level based on case mix and also houses the center for adult and child heart disease that is also the location of a cardiovascular department that is among the best in Italy for business volume and effectiveness of service.

The hospital has started up a complex program of interventions and activities that will lead to the restructuring, change of function and extension of the whole original structure, built at the end of the 50’s, according to the approved general masterplan.
The project also includes the extension for the creation of a new venue for the research and university department and for a “multifunctional transfer area” to strengthen the global technological equipment with intensive therapy, operating theatres, sterilisation centers, classrooms, research labs etc. This is also to allow the transfer of part of the activities during the restructuring work using the above mentioned “multifunctional transfer area”.

The second implementation, which is already in an advanced phase of execution, includes the construction of a new building to be made into a location for the university and biomolecular labs. This is a new structure with underground parking and five floors above ground, which will host the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and scientific research labs for the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato hospital, to allow the increase and functional reorganisation of the teaching and research activities.
The new building will be erected next to the main building of the hospital, in place of a multi-storey car park which has been completely demolished. The building will be connected to the hospital thanks to an underground tunnel on the underground parking floor.
The executive project, as well as structural, building and systems work, includes the demolishing of existing buildings nd the creation of a support barrier for the dig as well as all preliminary work required for the solution for the interference with sub-services.

To be more precise, the following preparatory work was required with separate tenders between 205 and 2016:

• adjustment of block D and relocation of the ENEL electrical booths;
• creation of a new medical gasses installation;
• creation of a new temporary refuse centre.
