MIRE, new maternity and infancy hospital in Reggio Emilia

The new MIRE, the Maternity and Infancy department in Reggio Emilia is a project that we see as a “warm embrace”, full of light and welcoming to play host to the event of birth, women, mothers and children with their families, integrated in the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova complex, but also open to the community.

Care for women and children, respect and love for women, for procreation, growth and the education of future generations are all essential for civilisation and progress, in every social and religious context. For over 150 years Reggio Emilia has dedicated the best cultural and social resources to these aspects, thus becoming an undisputed example, exported and studied worldwide, a great element of pride for our flag.

The project was designed by a group headed by Binini Partners along with the hospital management and financed by the Curare Onlus non-profit association, which had worked for years to raise funds in various events for this project, and could not but be supported by a great group effort of the whole community. Thus a new form of architecture is born, characterised by light and color, which is in turn an example of loving care for the individual, an innovative and technologically advanced building, pleasant and welcoming, open and functional, reserved and safe to be the setting for various moments of “birth” and “life” for an entire province.

The new hospital structure will contain all of the intensive, highly complex functions along with services and technical rooms in the basement. On the ground floor you will find the obstetrics and gynaecology emergency room, the labour and delivery area, the operating theatres and neonatology. An extremely rational installation, built on strong organizational synergies and fast pathways to obtain the best possible safety, efficiency and resource rationalisation as well as close integration of the professionals involved.
The three higher floors, instead, are less complicated since they are dedicated to patient rooms and clinics and are situated around a covered central courtyard which will guarantee a high level of comfort thanks to the natural lighting and ventilation of the spaces that face onto the courtyard. This volume will be a precious location to be used not only in collective occasions, but also as an added resource for all of paediatrics which looks in on the first floor, while obstetrics, with the natural birth center and gynaecology will be on the second and third floor. The building, therefore, adds the efficiency of the block structure to the living quality of courtyard structure in which al the patient rooms and clinics are externally facing, either onto he centra courtyard or the city skyline and further onto the hills. All of the service and relaxation ares are inward facing with large openings that regulate natural light.

The large internal courtyard, covered with a glass ceiling that draws your gaze towards the ever changing sky, acts as a spatial unit that brings together all the floors and functions around a visual center where mothers can relax, chidden can have a protected place to play and where social and training events can find and ideal meeting point. In general, from every floor, every area and every person can feel as though they are part of this system, modifying its light, moment and context,

Particular care has been dedicated to the patient rooms, the welcoming spaces for women, children and families. These areas are furnished and specialized according to function considering also all of the integrated equipment for the work of the staff. The walls of the rooms and corridors will be considered as spaces in an art gallery, ready to showcase the drawings and games of the children as well as artwork and photography based on an educational and compositional narrative which will make the hospital a place of life.

The compositional and volumetric structure emphasises this light concept with the clean surfaces that describe the volumes and contain the large glass facades, following simple, elegant forms, assuring environmental and landscape sustainability of the project. The color of the facades, the balconies and terraces and the courtyard further liven up the structure, connecting to the existing one with the graded hues and natural materials.

The Mire is therefore a project characterised by important health, technology and compositional innovations to meet all the expectations regarding technical and scientific advances, humanisation and welcoming for the maternity and infancy of the future.

The project is correct and appropriate from a technical standpoint, but also shows a high compositional and architectural quality, thanks to the attention to design and spaces. These elements received honourable mention at The Plan Award 2018 in the Health Future category.
